Challenges of using short videos in ELT
Abstract
In the 21st century, the rapid development of digital technology has led to the emergence of short videos. Because of distinct attraction, short video - a type of polycode text - has influenced many societal levels, particularly in the educational sector. Investigating the usefulness of short videos for particular purposes in academic fields is the main goal. However, the difficulties encountered by educators in using short videos for teaching in the actual teaching process have rarely been explored. The purpose of this study is to explore the challenges encountered in the specific application of short videos in English language teaching in secondary school in China. This study employed a case study as a quantitative way to examine the challenges six teachers had by using instances of their instructional strategies. According to the research, these challenges are mostly caused by technical flaws in the apparatus and lack of professional skills. The findings of this article have significance for future short-video instruction.
