Studying the Concept of Information by IT-Students

Abstract

Introduction. Despite the current lack of scientific consensus on the content of the term “information”, when teaching IT students there is a need to form a working, fairly rigorous understanding of this term, which has practical significance in the field of information technology. To improve the training of students in IT areas, to achieve greater consistency and consistency of training, it is advisable to include questions related to the definition of information in the programs of academic disciplines during their modernization. The purpose of this study is to form a working definition of the concept of “information”, acceptable and useful for students studying in IT areas, as well as a methodology for mastering the concept of information in the process of their preparation.
Materials and Methods. The main method of research is the logical analysis of the prevailing ideas about information that are significant for the field of information technology. The research materials are the existing concepts of information. In the course of the analysis, the connection between the concept of information and the reduction in the number of alternatives, with a change in the heterogeneity of distribution was considered, the possibility of displaying as the most important property of information was taken into account.
Results. The working definition of information formulated as a result of the study is quite broad, it covers cases that are practically significant for information technology and allows the possibility of using it in a wide range of disciplines of the professional cycle in the preparation of students in IT areas. The proposed definition is quite simple and understandable, and at the same time strictly mathematical. It is quite accessible to students of IT areas in the very first courses of study. Such an explanation of information seems to be convenient and useful for learning. This approach to the definition of information is quite constructive.
Discussion and Conclusion. The use of the approach to the concept of information developed as a result of the study can be an effective methodological technique in the educational process. At the same time, this definition does not claim to be absolute universality; it does not consider the humanitarian, social, legal and philosophical aspects of information that are the subject of the disciplines of the socio-humanitarian cycle. It is shown how the developed approach can be used to modernize the programs of academic disciplines for training students in IT areas.
